“The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered” launched April 22 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass, bringing the classic role-playing game into the modern era.
Developer Virtuos has completely rebuilt the 2006 Game of the Year winner in Unreal Engine 5, recreating every asset from scratch while maintaining the essence of the original experience.
“The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered modernizes the 2006 Game of the Year with all-new stunning visuals and refined gameplay,” reads the games official description.
Players can expect dramatically improved graphics alongside numerous quality-of-life improvements. The game features completely reanimated lip syncing based on the original performance capture data, giving new life to character interactions.
The leveling system has received significant changes, with Virtuos noting it draws inspiration “from both Skyrim and Oblivion” to create a more balanced progression experience. The developer has also added sprinting, a feature notably absent from the original release.
Audio enhancements further modernize the experience, with newly recorded dialogue lines and unique voices for all the games various races, adding greater diversity to the world of Cyrodiil.
“Explore the vast landscape of Cyrodiil like never before and stop the forces of Oblivion from overtaking the land in one of the greatest RPGs ever from the award-winning Bethesda Game Studios,” the description continues.
Virtuos said all character locomotion has been redone from scratch, contributing to a more fluid gameplay experience throughout the adventure.
The remastered version includes all previously released DLC and expansions in the standard edition. A Deluxe Edition is also available, featuring bonus content such as extra weapons and horse armor — a playful reference to the infamous horse armor DLC for the original game that became a long-running meme in the gaming community.
Established in 2004, Virtuos has grown into one of the largest game development support studios globally. The company previously contributed to major franchises including Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, Dark Souls, BioShock, Battlefield, Uncharted and Horizon. The studio is currently supporting Konamis development of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake.
