Set in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), the game follows protagonist Atsu on her quest for vengeance against the Yōtei Six, a gang of outlaws who murdered her family and left her for dead 16 years ago. Armed with the same katana used to pin her to a burning ginkgo tree, Atsu returns to hunt down each member: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito.
While revenge drives the initial narrative, developers promise Atsu will forge unexpected alliances and find new purpose during her journey through the open world of Ezo.
“It’s been nearly five years since we shipped Ghost of Tsushima, and in that time we’ve been hard at work making Ghost of Yōtei something special,” said Sucker Punch Productions. “While the stories are unrelated, it’s important to us to make this a worthy follow-up to Jin’s journey.”
The game builds upon its predecessor’s open-world exploration system with increased freedom and variety. Players can choose which Yōtei Six member to pursue first, track additional bounties, seek weapon masters to learn new skills, and build campfires anywhere for rest.
A new gameplay mechanic will allow players to glimpse Atsu’s past to better understand her motivation and what was taken from her.
